To receive services, students must register with the OSD. Free support services include: readers, notetakers, Sign Language interpreters, Learning Disabilities Program, special parking, registration assistance, fee deferments authorized by the California Department of Rehabilitation, on-campus transportation, campus orientation and accessibility, proctor and test-taking arrangements, tutorial referral, housing assistance, support groups, workshops, special materials, adaptive technology, and referral to the Disabilities and Computing Program. Academic support services are determined for each student based on specific disability-based requirements. All contacts and assistance are handled confidentially.

The ombudsperson is responsible for listening and responding to complaints or concerns from any member of the campus community (i.e., students, faculty, and staff). Acting impartially, the ombudsperson may investigate unresolved complaints or facilitate the resolution of problems for which there are no established guidelines. When requested, the ombudsperson may also assist in resolving an issue through mediation. The Ombuds Office supplies information, gives referrals and is a designated Sexual Harassment Information Center for the entire campus community. The Ombuds Office operates independently of the administration and is authorized to recommend changes to University policies and procedures. All matters are handled confidentially.

Parking / Transportation

Summer Sessions parking permits will be available beginning May 1, 2008 on a first-come, first-served basis. You may apply for a parking permit on the Transportation Services Web site.

You may purchase a permit for the summer term, or pay for parking on a daily basis. A term permit is generally more cost effective and convenient. Please contact Parking Services for Summer 2007 permit fee information. Daily permits are sold on a space-available basis at Parking and Information booths located throughout the UCLA campus. Motorcycles, mopeds and motorscooters do not require parking permits, but may park only in designated areas.

Recreation

UCLA Recreation offers a wide scope of recreation activities ranging from organized team play to a jog around the campus perimeter. You can practice your favorite sport or learn a new one. The summer issue of Recreation Quarterly, available at the John Wooden Center, Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, and other campus locations, has details. You must show a valid BruinCard to use UCLA Recreation services.

Student Conduct

In order to carry on its work of teaching, research, and public service, the University has an obligation to maintain conditions under which the work of the University can go forward freely, in accordance with the highest standards of quality, institutional integrity, and freedom of expression, with full recognition by all concerned of the rights and privileges, as well as the responsibilities, of those who comprise the University community.

Students are members of both society and the academic community with attendant rights and responsibilities. Students are expected to make themselves aware of and comply with the law, University policies, and campus regulations.

Summer sessions students are members of the campus community and will be afforded the same rights and privledges as regulary matriculated students and will be held to the same standards of conduct.

If you have questions or concerns about the rules and regulations that students are expected to adhere to please refer to the UCLA Student Conduct Code and consult either the Office of the Dean of Students or Summer Sessions. Prospective students should also review the campus drug policy.

Student Health Services

Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center

All Summer Sessions students are strongly advised to obtain adequate health insurance. International students with F-1 visas must purchase a health insurance policy from UCLA Summer Sessions, and must go to the UCLA Medical Center for services.

Eligibility

All Summer Sessions students are eligible for Ashe Center services on a fee-for-service basis for the summer term. Generally, Ashe Center fees are comparable to or lower than corresponding fees in the community. International students who have purchased a health insurance policy from UCLA Summer Sessions should go to the UCLA Medical Center for services, not the Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center.

Student Psychological Services

Student Psychological Services (SPS) provides both individual and group psychotherapy and counseling. Psychologists, clinical social workers, and psychiatrists offer assistance in dealing with stressful situations and emotional problems, from mild to severe. Students are welcome to seek help in clarifying feelings and issues, exploring alternatives, making difficult decisions, and in better understanding and dealing with relationships. SPS staff can also assist in handling intense emotional experiences such as separation, loss, anxiety or depression. The service is confidential and offered at a minimal fee to any summer student with a valid BruinCard.

Veterans and Social Security Services

The Veterans Affairs coordinator, located in 1113 Murphy Hall, provides information for veterans and eligible dependents about veterans' educational benefits, tutorial assistance, and the work-study program; issues fee waivers to dependents of California veterans who are deceased or disabled because of service-connected injuries and who meet the income restrictions in Education Code Section 10652; and certifies student status for recipients of Social Security benefits.
