Enrollment Overview

Enrollment Overview

College and university students, high school graduates, high school students entering grades 10-12, and adult learners are eligible to attend UCLA Summer Sessions. You can browse our catalog to learn more.

UCLA students: Enroll through URSA beginning February 2, 2009.

Visiting students: Enroll online here beginning March 2, 2009. There is no need to submit transcripts. Registration is completed when all fees are paid. New students who use the Online Registration Form will be required to submit a $100 nonrefundable deposit by credit card ($400 for international students). Once you complete the Online Registration Form, you will be issued a UCLA ID. You will use your ID to obtain a UCLA logon. The UCLA logon will allow you to enroll in your classes and make changes to your program using URSA (University Records System Access). If you already have a UCLA logon, you may use URSA to enroll. Be sure to update your address, e-mail, and phone number if necessary.

International Students

All international students must complete the I-20 Request Form and upload additional documents. International students may also call or visit one of our international registration centers, which can process all forms and collect fees in local currencies. Please see the International Students section for more information.

Requisites

Some courses require you to have taken specific courses or fulfilled certain requirements before you enroll in them. Please read Course Numbering, Examinations and Grading Policies and the descriptions of the courses you intend to take before enrolling to ensure that you have fulfilled the requisites or their equivalents. If you are a UCLA student, URSA will automatically check to see if you have met the enforced requisites for the courses you select.

If you are not a UCLA student but have had courses or practical experience comparable to the listed requisites, you may enroll in the course. Transcripts are not required. High school students should consult a guidance counselor before enrolling at UCLA.

If you are uncertain about the level of difficulty of a particular course, consult either the UCLA General Catalog or the instructor before enrolling to determine whether the course is appropriate for you.

Transferring UCLA Units to Other Institutions

UCLA courses are generally accepted for transfer credit. Students outside the UC system should get advanced approval of their courses from their home institutions. Transfer of credit is at the discretion of the receiving institution. For students from other UC campuses, all UCLA summer activity automatically appears on your home UC campus transcript, and the grades you earn at UCLA are included in your home UC campus grade-point average.

Admission to UCLA

Registration in Summer Sessions does not constitute admission to the University. Students who wish to attend UCLA in regular session must apply to either the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools, 1147 Murphy Hall, Box 951436, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1436, or the Graduate Admissions Office,1247 Murphy Hall, Box 951428, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1428.

Graduate Students

Enrollment in Summer Sessions courses does not constitute admission to graduate standing, nor does it substitute for the required continuous registration in Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters. Students who wish to apply Summer Sessions courses to their subsequent graduate program should consult in advance with their departmental adviser. This is also true if they have been readmitted to graduate standing and wish to resume graduate study in Summer Sessions. Information and applications are available from Summer Sessions, 1147 Murphy Hall.

If students take Summer Sessions courses following the award of their bachelor's degree, the grades do not appear on the undergraduate transcript (they are included on a separate transcript). After students are accepted by the Graduate Division, Summer Sessions grades are included on the graduate transcript and computed in the grade-point average.

Fees

Please see the fee table and refund schedule for a summary of fees and refund information. All fees are subject to change by the UC Regents. Please see the International Students section for more information about fees for international students.

Staff Discount

UCLA staff members are eligible for a discount during the summer term if they've been employed by UCLA for the previous six months and have a career appointment of at least 50% time or a casual appointment of 100% time. The discount waives the $300 Registration/Campus fee. UCLA staff members pay the remaining per-unit fees at the non-UC student rate.

To apply for a staff discount, please send an e-mail to enroll@summer.ucla.edu including your employee identification number. Then visit the Summer Sessions site for online registration. Please note that staff members who are also continuing UCLA undergraduate or graduate students are not eligible for the discount. Their Summer Sessions fees are automatically assessed at the lower UC student rates.
