Full or partial awards are made based on academic ability (and artistic ability, if applicable) and financial need. Financial need is determined by Low Income limits as defined by the State of California. Students who will enter a college or university in Fall 2009 are not eligible and should inquire about financial aid at the school they will attend. Awards may cover tuition for a single Academic Course or tuition and/or housing for an Institute. Awards do not cover travel costs, textbooks, or other course materials. Applicants who received Summer Scholar Support in the past are not eligible.

How to Apply

Institutes: If you wish to enroll in a summer institute you must first complete the Institutes Online Registration Form. When you submit the form, you will receive an e-mail confirming your registration. Please retain this e-mail for your records.

Instructor/department consent is required for admission to the Acting and Performance Institute, Dance-Theater Intensive, Art Institute, Sci | Art NanoLab, World Music Institute, and Global/Green Business Week for Young Leaders. Before submitting an application for Summer Scholar support, please await the e-mail acknowledging that you have been approved for the program. If you have not received an e-mail response within two weeks, please contact our office.

Individual Academic Courses: If you wish to enroll in a single UCLA academic course, please view the listing of approved lower-division academic courses for high school students, and then view course availability online at the Schedule of Classes. Beginning March 2, you will need to confirm your space in the course by enrolling online at this site.

Space in a program is not guaranteed, even if you apply for a scholarship. A space can only be reserved with a $100 deposit. If a student is awarded a full scholarship this deposit will be refunded.

Applicants must complete the Summer Scholars Support Application. Parents or guardians, please do not complete this application on behalf of your son or daughter. After you complete the application, send the following materials in one packet to the Office of Summer Sessions by April 1st.

  1. An official copy of your most recent High School Transcript
  1. A recent copy of your parent/s or guardian/s earnings statements or W2s, and/or signed Federal Income Tax Form (1040). If you are unable to provide this information, please contact the Summer Sessions and Special Programs office at 310-267-4836.

  2. Letter of Support from a teacher or school counselor commenting on your ability to successfully complete a rigorous academic or creative program. Download the letter of support form here. Please allow your recommender at least two weeks to complete a letter of support. Students applying for support for a creative program (e.g., music or dance) may ask a private instructor to write the letter on their behalf.

All supporting materials must be submitted in one packet to:

Scholarship Award Cancellation Policy

Institutes: Students who are awarded a scholarship to attend a summer institute but are unable to attend, must notify the Office of Summer Sessions in writing (by e-mail, fax, or via regular mail) prior to commencement of the program. If the student notifies UCLA Summer Sessions by noon of the business day prior to commencement of the program, the student will not be responsible for paying the program tuition or other fees associated with the program. However, if the student begins the program but subsequently leaves for any reason other than a personal emergency before its completion, the student will receive a failing grade for the course (reflected as a permanent notation on their academic transcript), and be required to repay the awarded scholarship and any other associated costs to UCLA.

College-Level Courses: Students who are awarded a scholarship to enroll in a college-level course, but are unable to attend, must notify the Office of Summer Sessions in writing (by e-mail, fax, or via regular mail) prior to commencement of the program. If the student notifies UCLA Summer Sessions by noon of the business day prior to commencement of the class, the student will not be responsible for paying the course tuition or other associated fees. However, if a student begins the class but subsequently leaves for any reason other than a personal emergency before its completion, the student will be charged for the course according to the regular refund schedule associated with UCLA summer sessions courses. (Please note that students who plan to drop a course should never take, or attempt to take, a final examination.)

I hereby certify that to the best of my knowledge the information submitted in support of my application for Summer Scholar support is accurate and truthful and that I have read and understood the cancellation policy.

If we find you have intentionally misrepresented yourself, your application will be disqualified from scholarship consideration.
