Overview - International Students

We welcome your interest in UCLA Summer Sessions! UCLA has a unique position as a top public university in a major urban setting. During the summer there is an exciting mix of UCLA students and visiting students from US and international colleges, universities, and high schools. We invite you to search through our Schedule of Classes for course listings, including topics in Management, Economics, Political Science, English as a Second Language, and Film and Television.

UCLA’s diverse population, high academic quality, and numerous facilities including libraries, residence halls, cafeterias, gyms, theaters, and museums offer a well-rounded experience. We hope you will take advantage of this exceptional opportunity and study with us this summer. Please read below for important information on getting started.

Registration and Enrollment Instructions

United States Department of Homeland Security regulations requireall international students coming for Summer Sessions to obtain an F-1 student visa. F-1 students are required to be enrolled full-time during the whole period of study. Enrollment in 8 (eight) units or more per six weeks of Summer Sessions classes is considered full-time.

International students may register for UCLA Summer Sessions through one of our registration centers, where staff members can assist in selecting classes, reserving on-campus housing, and obtaining health insurance. Fees are collected in local currency. Please refer to our list of Registration Centers.

If you are an international student and wish to register directly with UCLA Summer Sessions and not through one of our international registration centers, you may fill out the Online Registration Form.

All international students must submit additional information to us. Be sure to complete the International Student Supplemental Form and upload the following documents online.

International students here only for Summer Sessions are not permitted by immigration regulations to participate in courses involving internships.


Admission Information

UCLA Summer Sessions must be satisfied that the following requirements have been met before your admission is complete:

1. Proof of Sufficient Funds
We will accept a completed Financial Certification, found on the International Student Supplemental Form, or an original letter from your bank, dated within the last three months, on official bank stationery. Financial verifications must state that U.S. $5,000 will be available to you for each six weeks you are at UCLA.

2. Proof of English Proficiency
UCLA Summer Sessions requires proof of your proficiency in English (citizens of Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom are exempt). We require a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 79 or higher for the internet-based test, 213 or higher for the computer-based test or 550 or higher for the written test and a minimum overall score of 6.5 for IELTS. Students taking ESL classes only are not required to provide proof of English proficiency.

3. Passport / Identification Information
Send a photocopy of the page in your passport that shows your full name, passport number, birth date, passport expiration date, and photograph.

4. Health Insurance
International students holding F-1 visas must purchase a health insurance policy through UCLA Summer Sessions. The cost of the policy is $225 for the summer. Students who purchase the policy are eligible to obtain services at the UCLA Medical Center. However, this policy will not cover the cost for visits to the Student Health Center in the Ashe Center.

5. Full-time Status
International students holding F-1 visas must be enrolled in a minimum of eight units per six-week session.

All international students pay an international Registration/Campus Fee of $700 ($400 of which is nonrefundable). The entire $700 Registration/Campus Fee is nonrefundable after the second week of each session.

Session A  -- May 14, 2010
Session C -- June 18, 2010

Current F-1 Visa Holders

You do not need to obtain an additional F-1 visa to attend UCLA Summer Sessions if you already hold an F-1 visa and are in status and intend to continue your studies at the school you are presently attending. But you will need to obtain permission to attend UCLA Summer Sessions from your current school. If you do not intend to continue at your current school, you will need to contact our office for instructions.

Refunds for International Students

Upon registration you will be charged a $700.00 registration fee. $400 of this Registration/Campus Fee is nonrefundable (refundable with proof of visa denial). The health insurance premium is fully refundable if the request for cancellation is received by June 18, 2010 for session A and July 30, 2010 for session C. All tuition fees are fully refundable within the first two weeks of each session.

If you registered through one of our Registration Centers, your refund will be made through that office in local currency. No refund will be made in the U.S. or in U.S. currency.

All housing cancellations incur a fee of $300, independently of when the cancellation is made. Cancellation requests received after the program start date will be charged the cancellation fee of $300 plus the daily housing rate for each day before the cancellation is confirmed. A full refund will be issued if the contract cancellation is a result of circumstances beyond the student’s control (i.e. visa denial, medical problems), and this remains at the discretion of the Summer Sessions Office and the Housing Department. Proper documentation will be requested.
