ALC-Vietnam Curriculum

Curriculum

Prerequisities: none

Required Courses:
8 quarter units

Southeast Asian 170: Globalization in Vietnam
Southeast Asian 155: Globalization in Vietnamese Cinema and Literature

SEASIAN 170 examines work, consumption, politics, and culture as post-war Vietnam marketizes and becomes integrated into the global economy.  While transnational capital follows the organizational logic of flexible accumulation to make use of cheap feminized and racialized labor in Vietnam, the Vietnamese national government deploys new forms of citizenship and discipline.  Consequenctly, gender becomes integral to many of the issues we will explore.  Together, new forms of market and governance shape lived experiences of Vietnamese in new ways.

SEASIAN 155 is taught concurrently with SEAS 170.  As 170 examines the economic and political aspects of globalization in Vietnam, the thematic focus of 155 allows for explorations into filmic and literary narratives about Vietnam and its citizens as it undergoes globalization.

Optional Course:
4 quarter units

Southeast Asian 197: Research Seminar

Students may elect to add a research methodology component to their SEASIAN 170 and 155 coursework. The 197 course involves additional readings on research methodology. The research project must expand upon the themes covered in SEASIAN 170 and 155. There is no additional fee for this course.
