Accommodations
During the first two weeks in Zanzibar, students will stay with local families. While in Dar es Salaam, students will stay in a centrally-located hotel.
UCLA Summer Sessions reserves the right to change the housing location. Should this become necessary, we will arrange comparable accommodations elsewhere.
Meals
During the two weeks in Zanzibar, meals are included in the program fee. Students will eat their main meals with their host families and mid-morning tea (with snacks) at the language institute. Local restaurants also abound, with both Swahili food (a flavorful mix of African, Arab and Indian cuisines as well as seafood and a vast array of tropical fruit) and Western food (pizza, pasta, ice cream, etc.)
In Dar es Salaam, meals are not included, but students will generally eat together in hotels and restaurants; Tanzanian and Western cuisine will be available.
Please let us know when you apply for this program if you have special dietary needs, as well as any medical or physical conditions. We will advise you accordingly.
Excursions
In Zanzibar, students will go on a spice tour and visit the Zanzibar National Museum and Dhow Countries Music Academy. A complete schedule of excursions will be available at a later date.
In Dar, we will visit the U.S. embassy where we will meet with a public affairs officer to learn about the embassy's role in Tanzanian cultural projects.
This program has limited free time for independent sightseeing. Please consult with the faculty about independent travel during the program.
