Classics 153M (4 units): The Greeks and the Romans in the Bay of Naples
Italian 8A or 8C: Italian Conversation (2 units)
Italian 102B: From its base in the town of Sorrento, this course will combine lectures on the revival of classical culture in southern Italy during the Renaissance, with excursions to Naples and vicinity--from Pompeii and Herculanum to the Phlegraean Fields, lake Avernus (from where, according to classical mythology, the infernal river Styx sprung), Cumae, and the island of Capri.
Classics 153M: The course will survey the period from the first settlements and colonization by the Greeks in the eighth century BCE to the destruction of the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum in the first century CE. The course will consist of daily lectures and site visits.
Italian 8A or 8C: This program will provide students with the opportunity to practice conversational skills. Italian 8A will be held for beginners with no prior language background. For those students who already speak Italian, the program will provide more intermediate to advanced Italian Conversation with 8C. Students will be able to choose which level is right for them at the time of registration.
For UCLA Italian Majors and Minors, the Italian 102B and Classics 153M will be counted toward the major or minor. UCLA students may repeat Italian 8A and 8C one time for credit.
