Classics and Italian: Bay of Naples
Classical Culture in Modern Italy

June 29 - July 26, 2008

Classics-Italy Overview

Enjoy an idyllic summer in the Bay of Naples and study the art and culture of one of the most beautiful areas of Italy. Based in beautiful and historic Sorrento, at the crossroads of Mediterranean culture, this program looks at the imprint of ancient Greece and Rome on what is now Italy. To gain a better understanding of classical culture, students will learn about the colorful history of the area’s ancient Greek colonies that later rebelled against Roman domination. They will visit and study the abundant remnants of Greek and Roman life, most notably the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The program also takes an intensive look at the many representations of Naples in literature. Participants will analyze the various artistic interpretations of Neapolitan history. Students interested in Italian language will have the opportunity to work on their communication skills at beginning, intermediate, or advanced levels in a conversation section.
