Global Studies-Mexico Overview

Mexico’s economy, its politics and its society have been transformed in the past decade. NAFTA has created an export-oriented, manufacturing economy which has meant a huge change in the daily life of many Mexicans. Situated in Guanajuato, a beautiful cobblestoned colonial city located between Guadalajara and Mexico City, this program will study the multifaceted nature of Mexico’s great transformation. from closure to the outside world to international openness and democracy at home. The program will examine the challenges these changes have generated for Mexican citizens and leaders. Classroom sessions will be coupled with field trips to neighboring cities, including Teotihuacan and Leon. Short courses in survival Spanish will be available to all students on the program.

Scholarships: Merit-based scholarships of $1,000 - $1,500 from the UCLA International Institute are available for ten outstanding UCLA Global Studies majors or minors participating in a Global Studies summer program. Global Studies majors and minors must have a 3.50 GPA overall.. The Scholarship Application is due in late March. Since scholarships are limited in number, we recommend that UCLA students interested in the program's scholarship also apply for financial aid by the necessary deadlines.
