History-Rome Student Quotes

Student Testimonials

"The program was amazing. I had an awesome time and learned a lot! The professor was wonderful. . . . The staff of the hotel were all very friendly and helpful! The sites to see on the program were great. I feel like I got the best guided tour possible. If I had to do it all over again, I most definitely would."

Anne Swoboda: "I really enjoyed the walking tours and getting lectures on the spot. That really brought these pieces of history closer to home. I especially enjoyed the churches. I would say Santa Sabina, in Rome was the best. Many of the churches had beautiful mosaics, which were incredibly detailed and ornate. They were simply awe inspiring."

"Beneficial and worthwhile; unique and exciting."

Marcela Martin: "Professor Lovano took us to lots of different places: the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica and the Grotto. I am an art history major so I was really excited to go to all the museums. We walked to the Vatican. The Spanish steps were maybe five minutes from our hotel. The hotel was right off a main street, so there were tons of shops there. We had a combination of lecture in the morning and walks throughout Rome in the afternoon. He would take us to see different monuments, like the Colosseum. The lecture and walk were tied together. It was kind of intense because there was so much information. He went in very chronological format, so it was well organized."

"[Dr. Lovano's] knowledge of all aspects of Rome is more than impressive"

Scott Shipp: "I thought the program was great.  All of the walks were well designed.  We went from the beginning of Rome through the Roman Republic, through the rule of the emperors, visiting each forum that each emperor built to honor himself!  We got about a thousand years of history. Professor Lovano was really great.  This course really maintains UCLA’s academic reputation.  And, it fulfilled upper division history requirements.  If I could go again, I would."

"On site learning is invaluable."

Marcela Martin: "We went to Pompeii. We went to Tivoli. We went to the Villa Borghese, which has all these amazing fountains. It was really beautiful. Pompeii was my absolute favorite. It was really neat to see the ancient city uncovered. The frescoes were amazing. I couldn’t believe how well preserved they were."

"I felt really comfortable at the Colonna Palace Hotel in Rome. There were a lot of great places to sit and relax at the end of the day. We had an incredible view of the piazza from our room. And, it was really easy to get around. We could walk everywhere."

"[This program] is a prime example of how history should be taught and learned."

"My time in Rome is indescribable. . . . Academically, it was a superb program. Rome provided me not only with this academic knowledge, but cultural as well."
