Institute of the Environment: Thailand
Sustainable Ecosystems

July 1 - July 30, 2008

ALC-Vietnam Overview

This sustainable development program, offered by UCLA’s interdisciplinary Institute of the Environment, engages students in academic fieldwork and community-based service learning.  The program is based in Thailand’s North Andaman region, Phang Nga Province, adjacent to the international destination resort of Phuket. Student investigations focus on environmental issues connected to coastal ecosystems and communities.  Two courses are part of this program.  In ENV 14, students gain environmental science knowledge, learning about the coastal environment, its physical, chemical, biological and geological components of the oceans and the dynamic interactions between living organisms.  Through ENV 131, students practice social research methods, conducting gender and sustainability analyses with community members using participatory approaches.  The program is open to all interested students.

Directed by Michael Silverman, UCLA Institute of the Environment, and Rebecca Shipe, UCLA Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Institute of the Environment. For more information, please visit the links at the top of this page.

Financial aid is available to qualified UCLA students. All other students should inquire about financial aid at their home institution.
