Portuguese-Brazil Curriculum

Curriculum

Prerequisites: prior knowledge of Spanish or another foreign language

Required Courses:
12 quarter units

Elementary Portuguese: 102A, 102B, 191
Intermediate Portuguese: 102B, 103, 191
Advanced Portuguese: 103, 105, 191

Portuguese 102A, 102B, and 103 are accelerated courses in introductory and intermediate Portuguese offered for students who already have a good command of a romance language and who wish to acquire a basic knowledge of Portuguese in a relatively short period of time.

Portuguese 191 is required for all students and will focus on Afro-Brazilian history and culture. Portuguese 46 at UCLA will be waived for Portuguese majors and minors taking this course.

FLAS Recipients: This program qualifies for FLAS funding. The core program consists of 126 contact hours. Some FLAS awards may require more contact hours. To increase the contact hours, FLAS recipients may register for the optional 199 course (see below) .

Optional Course:
4 quarter units
Portuguese 199: Directed Research

You may earn independent study units for this program. Obtain your intructor's approval on subject and format. FLAS recipients should consult with the program director about content and contact hours. The project is due by September 16. Please note that these dates apply even if you plan to travel after the program ends. There is an additional fee for this independent study course.

Grading

Grades in required courses are based on attendance, class participation, journals, quizzes, and a final examination. The instructor reserves the right to vary this format.

Schedule

All schedules, itineraries, and group activities are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.

Portuguese Instruction (102A, 102B, 103):
Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to noon

Portuguese Culture (191):
Tuesday and Thursday, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Portuguese 191 field trips will include accompanied museum visits, guided walking tours of Salvador Bahia, and visits to such sites as a terreiro de Candomblé and a capoeira academy.  It will also include special excursions outside of Salvador. A precise itinerary will be mailed to enrolled students in the spring.

Classes generally do not meet on Saturdays and Sundays.

Textbooks

You are responsible for purchasing your own textbooks and workbooks. We strongly suggest you read as much of the text material as possible before you depart. Textbook information will be available at a later date.
