UCLA is a world leader in English language pedagogy, testing, and research. Drawing on the skills of the renowned Applied Linguistics Department, the UCLA Summer English Language Academy offers several classes this summer that are aimed at improving students’ skills in academic English. These classes are specially designed to help students perform better in their coursework by emphasizing reading comprehension, public speaking for oral presentations, correct pronunciation, and university-level writing. The classes will be fully integrated into the academic environment of the campus and students will benefit from a stimulating curriculum and participation in the vibrant campus life.
UCLA summer classes offer university credit and are open to UCLA graduate and undergraduate students as well as visitors. Transfer students, in particular, will benefit greatly from improving their English before they begin regular coursework. Some students will be asked to take a placement test (the ESLPE) which will help the coordinators direct students to the classes they need most.
Part of UCLA's new Center for World Languages, the Academic English classes offer students the chance to bring their language skills up to university standards.
