2008 Course Offerings

Arabic

The most commonly spoken of the Semitic languages and the principal language of more than twenty countries.

Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian

Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian are closely related Southern Slavic languages formerly known collectively as Serbo-Croat. They have about 18.5 million speakers, particularly in Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, Serbia, and Montenegro.

Chinese

Chinese is the language spoken by the country with the largest population in the world. This summer intensive course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of standard Chinese, including pronunciation, grammar, and Chinese characters, with emphasis on all four basic language skills -- speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing.

Estonian

Estonian is closely related to Finnish and is one of the few languages of Europe that is not Indo-European. There many immigrant communities in the United States where the language is still spoken.

Hebrew

The program provides a wide perspective -- as a means of communication, a vehicle for cultural heritage providing a rich understanding of Jewish history, social and religious institutions throughout the area.

Igbo

A Southeastern Nigerian language that is tonal like Yoruba and Chinese, Igbo is spoken by around 18 million people.

Iranian (Persian)

An official language in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, Persian is a literary and scientific language that has influenced languages throughout the Middle East. Persian is widely spoken in Los Angeles and Iranian culture thrives throughout the area.

Latvian

Latvian is primarily spoken in the recently independent country of Latvia. The Latvian language is related to most of the languages of Europe (as well as some languages of India, Pakistan, Iran, etc.).

Lithuanian

Lithuanian is a Baltic language related to Latvian and Old Prussian with about 3.5 million speakers in Lithuania. Lithuanian is considered to oldest surviving Indo-European language and is thought to have retained some features of Proto-Indo-European (PIE).

Romanian/Moldavian

Linguists consider standard Moldovian to be identical to standard Romanian, a Romance language that split off and until the modern age was not influenced by other Romance languages.

Russian

Los Angeles is home to a vibrant community of Russian emigrants who keep the culture alive with an active calendar of events, including concerts, film screenings, and more.

Spanish

More Californians can claim Spanish as their mother tongue than English so Los Angeles is the perfect spot to learn the language. In this course, students become acquainted with several different Spanish-speaking communities in the area.

Swahili

The language that unites a diverse group of peoples on the Eastern Coast of Africa. UCLA has long been a respected center of Swahili studies.

Tigrinya

The national language of Eritrea and the fourth most spoken of the Semitic languages.

Turkish

An intensive introduction to grammar, reading, conversation, and elementary composition of a language spoken by 70 million people worldwide.

Language Intensives in L.A. are organized by the UCLA Center for World Languages with support from the UC Consortium for Language Learning and Teaching, the UCLA African Studies Center, and the various UCLA language departments.
