Managing and mitigating environmental risks are conventionally perceived as added costs to businesses.  However, more and more corporations recognize the net gain of incorporating environmental considerations into business or operational strategies.  For instance, some companies see this as an opportunity to ensure that they stay competitive through brand enhancement and cost saving; others employ this as a market barrier to rivals; while some sectoral pioneers exploit new market opportunities that arise from environmental concerns.  This program will examine the synergy between business and sustainability, and how to translate these emerging challenges into business opportunities for you and added value for your stakeholders.

This program utilizes current research and up-to-date materials to stimulate and engage participants in discussions of new models and tools that support environmental management while enhancing corporate performance.  We will examine the risks and opportunities that come from environmental issues in corporate management.  Specific topics covered in the program include: environmental regulation and industry dynamics, environmental product differentiation, environmental management systems, alliances between firms and non-governmental organizations, environmental performance and financial performance, how an environmental focus and its link to operational excellence, stakeholder communication and crisis management, and the environment as it relates to economic development and international business.

By the end of the program, participants should be able to determine why environmentally sound strategies are important for their business’ long-term success.

This program will be taught by full-time UCLA faculty members from the UCLA Anderson School of Management, the UCLA Institute of the Environment, the UCLA Department of Public Policy, and the UCLA Department of Economics, who are leading researchers and distinguished scholars in their own fields.  Together, these faculty can offer a truly comprehensive and cross-disciplinary view of the environmental forces affecting businesses today and how you should respond proactively.
