UCLA's renowned Department of Ethnomusicology once again hosts the World Music Summer Institute! Immerse yourself in one of four musical performance traditions: Music of African Americans, Music of Mexico, Music of Korea, and Music of China*.

In one week, students gain tremendous knowledge and exposure to the repertoire and musical style of one of these cultural groups. They learn to perform music through study with a master artist, and are taught about the history, culture, and music theory of that tradition. Outside of class, young musicians attend field trips to selected venues across Los Angeles, and take advantage of the opportunity to experience some of L.A.'s finest musical cultures firsthand.

The World Music Summer Institute culminates with a final performance in UCLA's Schoenberg Hall Auditorium on Saturday. Friends and family are invited to attend this lively performance! All participants earn two (2) units of University of California academic credit. This program is open to musicians of all ages--high school through adults.

News! 2007 WMSI alumna Felisa McQuiage recently sang in the 2008 BET Celebration of Gospel with John Legend, Shirley Caesar, Bobby Jones, Patti Labelle, Marvin Sapp, BeBe Winans, and Fred Hammond!

"Live from Los Angeles,” a CD and DVD by James Roberson, WMSI faculty member, was nominated for five Stellar Gospel Music Award awards and won with singer Beverly Crawford as Traditional Female Vocalist of the Year. The Stellar awards are the gospel music industry’s top prize. “Live from Los Angeles” features “He’s Done Enough,” which was Crawford’s #1 hit single on Billboard magazine’s gospel list for 65 weeks.

UCLA ethnomusicology, music, and musicology majors may apply to the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Student Opportunity Fund for a grant to subsidize the fee for these institutes. The application for this Fund will be posted at www.schoolofmusic.ucla.edu.

*The Music of China program is offered in partnership with the UCLA Confucius Institute.
