2010 Summer Sessions Planning Guide

Message to faculty from Summer Sessions director David Unruh:

To: UCLA Faculty
From: David Unruh, Assistant Provost, Academic Program Development
Ref: 2010 Summer Sessions Planning Guide

Summer Sessions is already beginning its early planning for next summer. Based on past experience, we have made course recommendations to your department. Faculty who wish to teach one of the recommended courses, or propose other ones, should let their departments know now. Since departments must complete and submit class schedules, faculty recommendations, and budgets by November 30, your request for a teaching assignment should be in to your department chair or school dean by November 20.

For your convenience, a course proposal form is available. The form itself is not required but the information it requests should be included with your proposal.

Our calendar for 2010 is as follows:

Program Planning: September - November 30. By November 20, faculty submit proposals to their departments. By November 30, departments schedule their classes and faculty and update their budget projections.
Program Review: December 1-December 15. Courses and budgets are reviewed and either approved or revised. Undergraduate or Graduate Council approvals for new or revised courses should be secured by the last week of November.
Faculty Invitations: January and February. Faculty invitation letters and contracts are prepared and mailed. Signed copies should be returned within two weeks.
Enrollment and Registration: Begins on February 1 for UCLA students and March 1 for visitors. Students may register for the first session until June 25, and for the second session until August 6. Enrollment following those dates requires permission of the instructor. Enrollment figures are available on the Web, and class rosters are distributed to departments weekly.

2010 Summer Sessions Schedule:

Most courses are offered in one of two six-week sessions. Some courses are offered in eight or ten weeks.
First Six-week Session 6/21 to 7/30
Eight-week Session 6/21 to 8/13
Ten-week Session 6/21 to 8/27
Second Six-week Session 8/2 to 9/10

Faculty Compensation:

In general, faculty receive 8.5% of their 9-month annual salary for each 4- or 5-unit course they teach in a 6-week summer session. Faculty may teach up to 4 courses by teaching a maximum of 2 classes each in both 6-week sessions for a total compensation of up to 33% of their nine-month academic year salary.
