UCLA Students

Global Health Programs

Students applying for financial aid for the Global Health research opportunity in Mexico City or the internship in Malawi need to apply through the regular Summer Sessions Financial Aid Application beginning April 1.

Applying for a Private Loan

Federal and State financial aid for summer Travel Study programs is no longer available. UCLA students may be eligible for private loans. Private loan recipients must pay their remaining fees in full by May 9.

In order to apply for a private loan, UCLA students must complete the following:

  • pay the $300 nonrefundable deposit to secure your spot in your Travel Study program;
  • complete a Private Loan Agreement Form and submit proof that you have been approved for the loan by April 25, 2008. For more details on applying for a Private Loan visit www.fao.ucla.edu/Forms/pdfs/alt_loan_07_ug.pdf;
  • pay the remainder of your Travel Study Program fees by May 9, 2008.

UCLA Students receiving Federal and State Aid

UCLA students who applied for federal and state aid by the April 4 deadline should receive their E-FAN's by late May. Students should accept their offer quickly to ensure swift disbursement 5-10 days before the program start date.

  1. You will receive your eFAN in late May;
  2. Your package will consist of LOANS.  Grants are extremely limited and may not be available for your program;
  3. Please be sure to accept your financial aid package right away to insure a smooth disbursement (your eFAN offer does expire);
  4. Be sure to monitor your MyFAO account (https://www.fao.ucla.edu/myfao/).  If you receive requests from the Financial Aid Office for supplemental documentation, be sure to respond quickly;
  5. If you are a first-time loan recipient at UCLA, you will need to attend a Debt Management Session before your loan funds can disburse.  A schedule of Debt Management Sessions is located at www.loans.ucla.edu/dms.html;
  6. If you decline any part of your financial aid package, you will need to pay immediately the amount of your program fee that the financial aid would have covered (pay through URSA OnLine at www.ursa.ucla.edu):
  7. If everything is in order, your financial aid will disburse 5-10 days before your program start-date (be sure to verify your disbursement before you leave for your program);
  8. If you have not already done so, be sure to sign up for Bruin Direct so any refund can be directly deposited into your personal bank account: www.amco.ucla.edu/bruindirfaq.htm;
  9. Just in case, have an "emergency" cash supply should there be a delay with your disbursement;
  10. If you have a problem with your disbursement, please contact Jennifer Fernandez at (310) 206-9322;
  11. If you have not purchased your airfare, we recommend that you do so immediately.  STA Travel in Ackerman Union can help find low-cost airfares. DO NOT wait until your disbursement to purchase your air travel.

Q. If I accept financial aid in the summer, will it affect my financial aid package during the next academic year?

A. For UCLA students, the federal loans you accept in summer affect the following academic year. For students who need federal loans for the following academic year, the UCLA Financial Aid Office will offer more parent and private loans to cover your summer program. We advise you to meet with your financial aid advisor to discuss your summer plans and learn about the types of loans that will be offered to you. Non-UCLA students should consult with their home institution financial aid office.

Q. Do I have to pay the $300 nonrefundable registration fee when I apply for a program?

A. Yes, all students are required to pay the $300 non-refundable registration fee to secure their spot in a program. When your financial aid disburses, you will be reimbursed for this registration fee.

Q. How much financial aid can I expect to receive?

A. A typical package includes aid for all Travel Study program expenses, including program fee, airfare, textbooks, and spending money. Non-UCLA students should consult with their home institution financial aid office.
