Academic Courses: International Students

ACADEMIC COURSES:

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Fees

Fees

Summer fees reflect the total number of units you enroll in. Below is a summary of fees that apply to all visiting international students including high school students.

Please note that the non-refundable deposit of $400 required for registration will apply toward your summer tuition balance.

All fees are subject to change without prior notice.

Registration is not complete until the deposit is paid in full. Those who are not prepared to pay can submit their registration form and retrieve registration at another time to make the deposit.

This deposit is not refundable under any circumstances even if you drop all courses before they begin. If you withdraw, this deposit will appear as processing fee charge on your BruinBill account.

SUMMARY OF FEES

Registration Fee $790 (not applicable if enrolled in online courses only)
UCLA academic courses delivered online carry the same unit value and UCLA degree credit, and transcripts do not indicate if a class was taken online or on campus. If you enroll in online courses only, the campus fee will be waived. Please note that "hybrid" courses that have components offered both online and on UCLA campus are not considered online courses for summer registration purposes.

To view a full list of online courses offered during the summer, please click here.

2017 Unit Fee $342 per unit (undergraduate) / $342 per unit (graduate)
IEI Fee $61 per summer (students without a bachelor's degree)
Document Fee

Document fee covers a lifetime supply of official transcripts mailed by USPS first class mail. Summer-only visiting students will be assessed a one-time document fee during their first summer term; returning summer-only students will not be subject to the document fee. For more information, please click here.

$50 assessed only for the first summer term at UCLA
Health Insurance $375
iStart@UCLA Fee $59
Late Add Fee
A non-refundable late fee of $50 will be assessed for each course added after Friday of second week of the session. No late fees are assessed if a student is re-adding a class that was dropped, switching sections of the same class, or adding any 99, 195-199, 596-599 courses.
$50 per class added after second week

All registered international students are required to complete the iStart pre-arrival online orientation. This orientation is designed to help answer any questions you might have about your summer at UCLA. All modules and the corresponding quizzes must be completed by:

Friday, June 23 for Session A

Friday, August 4 for Session C

FEE CALCULATION EXAMPLE

The following example is intended to help you understand how fees are calculated.

International students are required to maintain at least 8 units. If enrolled in two courses that carry 4 and 5 units respectively, e.g., ESL 20 and SOCIOL 1, your fees are estimated at $4,413 regardless of whether the two courses are offered in Session A or Session C:

Summer Fee Calculation Example

Registration fee $790
4-unit course unit fees $342 x 4 = $1,368
5-unit course unit fees $342 x 5 = $1,700
IEI fees $61
Document Fee $50
Health Insurance $375
iStart@UCLA Fee $59
ESTIMATED TOTAL $4,413

This is only an estimate, and the actual amount may vary depending on whether you have attended UCLA Summer Sessions before, whether your courses carry material use fees, or when courses are added.

If you wish to apply for UCLA housing, the estimated housing fee for 6 weeks is $1,991 based on a triple room and 15 meals a week. Rates can vary greatly based on student preferences.

Please visit UCLA Housing Services for more information. If you sign up for housing, you will be assessed separately by UCLA Housing Services.

INSTRUCTIONAL ENHANCEMENT INITIATIVEAn Instructional Enhancement Initiative (IEI) Fee will be assessed to students without a bachelor's degree. Individuals with a Bachelor’s Degree will not be assessed this fee.

MATERIAL USE FEES
In addition, a small number of courses carry additional Materials Use Fees. If you enroll in any of those courses, you will be assessed a material use fee for the course.

In the event of withdrawal, the total refund amount will reflect the non-refundable iStart@UCLA fee and the non-refundable deposit, appearing as Processing Fee on the BruinBill account.

In the event of withdrawal or a dropped course, the following fees are refundable only if the course is dropped before the refund deadlines (specified above):

  • Unit fees
  • Instructional Enhancement Initiative fees
  • Material use fees
  • Campus fee
  • Document fee

These fees are 100% non-refundable after the deadline, and students will be financially liable for any courses you are enrolled in past the refund deadline.

IMPORTANT: No refunds are issued after the above deadlines, which are the responsibility of each student to know and to comply with, and students cannot use ignorance of the Summer Sessions refund policy and deadlines for justification for seeking a refund.

Health Insurance fees are 100% non-refundable after the start of your insurance coverage dates. Please refer to your health insurance card to verify the effective insurance coverage period, as these dates are subject to change.

Only those who encountered unforeseen, extenuating circumstances may request a refund. Reasons such as the following will NOT be considered for a refund:

  • Lack of knowledge of Summer Sessions Policy and regulations
  • Reliance on system drops
  • Insufficient, delayed, and/or cancellation of financial aid award
  • Conditions or chronic illnesses that remain static and are known to the student at the time of registration/enrollment
  • Dissatisfaction with course(s) and/or grade received

To file for a refund petition, please contact UCLA Summer Sessions at (310) 825-4101 or enroll@summer.ucla.edu. Refund petitions must be filed within one week from the official drop date, or Friday of the last week of the class, whichever comes first.

No refund petitions will be accepted for retroactively dropped courses after October 31 of the calendar year during which the course was taken.

REFUND SCHEDULE

For students who are not considered currently matriculated UCLA students as of Summer, refunds may take up to three weeks.
