Engineering Design Summer Institute
ENGINEERING DESIGN SUMMER INSTITUTE
UCLA Course Credit: ENGR 96A
Experience an introduction to engineering design while building teamwork and communication skills and examination of engineering majors offered at UCLA and of engineering careers. Complete hands-on engineering design projects, prepare short reports describing projects, and present your of results. Specific project details and relevant majors explored vary with specific course.
The Engineering Design Summer Institute is offered consecutively over two sessions, each lasting three weeks. When registering, students will choose to focus on one of the four areas of concentrations below:
Aerospace Engineering - Rockets: Introduction to basic concepts in aerospace engineering, computer-aided design, finite element analysis, 3D printing, carbon fiber layup, telemetry, general mechanical design and assembly, and machine shop fabrication. Concepts applied to team-based design, construction, and testing of small 3D-printed rockets and larger, high-power rockets. Students present their designs orally and in writing, and evaluate their performance against other student teams. Rockets fired from Mojave launch site in class field trip. No prior experience or coursework needed. Course is led by experienced undergraduate members of Bruin Rocket Project. Meetings, and design and fabrication homework, make use of Makerspace facilities and tools.
Mechanical Engineering - GoKarts: Introduction to basic concepts in mechanical engineering, computer-aided design, finite element analysis, electric motor performance, steering linkages, general mechanical design and assembly, and machine shop fabrication as applied to team based design, construction, and testing of electric-powered Go-kart. Students present their designs orally and in writing, and evaluate their performance in timed races against other student teams. No prior experience or coursework needed. Course is led by experienced undergraduate members of Bruin Racing. Meetings, and design and fabrication homework, make use of Makerspace facilities and tools.
Electrical Engineering - Electrocardiogram: Students will learn concepts in electrical circuit design and analysis, cardiac electrophysiology, and biophysics to work in teams to design, construct, and test circuit boards capable of measuring human electrocardiograms. Students will also learn how to interface circuitry with Arduino microcontrollers for data acquisition and transfer to a computer for analysis and display. 3D printers and laser cutters will be used to assist in circuit fabrication and packaging.
Chemical Engineering - Coffee: Students learn and use concepts in chemical engineering to study heat transfer, liquid extraction, temperature control, and chemical measurement to design, construct, and evaluate apparatus and processes for roasting coffee beans, liquid extraction from coffee grounds, and measurement of extracted compounds. Students will also learn basic electronics and Arduino microcontroller programming to construct temperature control and measurement instrumentation. 3D printers and laser cutters will be used for apparatus fabrication.
To participate for the Engineering Design Summer Institute, you must meet the following qualifications:
- 14 years of age or older prior to June 24, 2019
- Enrolled in grades 8th – 12th during Spring 2019
Students who do not meet the minimum program requirements should not register and should consider other summer opportunities.
How To Register
Registration for the Engineering Design Summer Institute can be done conveniently online using the steps below.
- Access the Summer Institute Online Registration Form. Read all terms and conditions, then scroll to the bottom and “Continue to Registration”.
- Complete the first page of the online registration form by answering all mandatory questions, then, select “Continue” at the end of the first page.
- Provide responses to all questions on the second page of the online registration form, then “Submit”.
- Once your form is submitted, you will be redirected to the retrieve registration page, where you can select “Pay Now” to proceed with payment of the non-refundable deposit . Continue with the payment instructions to reserve your space in the program.
A space in the program is not reserved for you until valid payment of the non-refundable deposit* is completed. Those who are not prepared to pay after program acceptance can submit their registration form, log out, and retrieve registration at another time to make payment, however you risk losing a space in the program if program reaches capacity prior to the ability to pay. An email with instructions to retrieve registration will be sent within an hour of submitting your registration.
How to Make Changes to My Registration Already submitted the online registration form but need to make a change or finish your registration? You can easily do so by retrieving your registration. To retrieve registration, please complete the steps below:
- Access the Summer Institute Retrieve Registration Form here.
- You will need your five-digit registration number that was sent to your email address. Fill out the form, then “Submit”.
Many changes and additions can be made using retrieve registration including: Payment submission of the non-refundable deposit
- Uploading required documents
- Dropping a current program
- Adding a second program
- Switching to a new program
