Model United Nations Summer Institute

Thank you for visiting the Model United Nations Summer Institute Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page! Here, you will find answers to questions that students and parents most commonly ask us specifically about this program.

Still have questions? Check out the general Summer Institutes FAQ page at

What prior knowledge do students need of model united nations?

Students do not need to have any prior knowledge of Model United Nations to succeed in this Summer Institute.  Beginning students will be taught everything they need to know from how to deliver a speech and what exactly is international politics to how to become strong and effective delegates. Seasoned delegates are also welcome to attend MUNSI, where they will be able to hone their skills in a fast and competitive atmosphere.

What attire should students bring? Will they need formal outfits throughout the program?

Students need to bring both casual wear and Western Business Attire. Western Business Attire will be required from Wednesday to Saturday of the program as this will be when students begin to simulate a United Nations conference.

Additionally, students should pack casual wear for times outside of committee, as well as bring comfortable shoes to wear to and from committee (we will be doing a lot of walking!).  We will be taking an afternoon field trip to Santa Monica during the week; therefore, items such as beach towels, bathing suits, sunscreen, and water bottles are highly encouraged. Students are also encouraged to bring spending money for daily lunches, as well as for any souvenirs/sundries.

Is a laptop required, recommended, or not needed?

Laptops and other electronic devices are not allowed while in committee, however, students are welcome to bring their technology for use while out of committee or on their free time.

When completing college applications, MUNSI participants should include UCLA as a college, university, or other post-secondary institution you have attended.

Your MUNSI coursework will appear on your UCLA Transcript as follows: Glbl St 10 INTERNTNL DIPLOMACY 2.0 units

If you like, you can also include MUNSI as part of your Personal Statement, and/or as an Activity.  For the latter, you can list the following:

  • Activity type: Academic
  • Position/Leadership description and organization name: Student at UCLA Model UN Summer Institute
  • Please describe this activity: Intensive summer course for highly motivated scholars interested in international diplomacy
