Program Overview

The UCLA Owning Shakespeare Summer Institute is a two-week, UC credit-bearing, intensive program that is a practical, immersive and comprehensive study of Acting Shakespeare. Under the guidance and direction of established experts in the field, students will learn essential and eclectic strategies for acting Shakespeare, including but not limited to:  Differing practical approaches to bring Shakespearean text to vivid and original life,  illustrated in shared workshops and then applied in practice  through intensive rehearsal of selected scenes and monologues. Working creatively with verse, and complex vocabulary;  comprehensive voice classes, supported by individual tutorials;  poetry-reading, with a special focus on Shakespearean sonnets;  Demystifying Shakespeare: the social, historical, and literary context of Shakespeare’s writing career; the theater in his time, his company, his playhouse(s), and his contemporaries, the First Folio, and ‘unseen’ cue scripts.  The two week course includes three informal presentations first of individual sonnets and monologues, and culminates in the final in-house presentation of specially selected and assigned  Shakespeare scenes incorporating three informal, in-house presentations. World class professional artists whose experience includes the renowned Royal Shakespeare Company and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival will teach what it takes to bring Shakespeare’s dramatic literature to life, with truth, spontaneity, verbal alacrity, creativity, confidence, and deep and empathetic humanity.



Program Eligibility

To participate for the Owning Shakespeare Summer Institute, you must meet the following qualifications:

  • 18 years of age or older prior to June 22, 2020
  • Currently have a high school diploma (or equivalent)

Students who do not meet the minimum program requirements should not register and should consider other summer opportunities.

Application Requirements

The Owning Shakespeare Summer Institutes is by instructor consent only. To participate, you must apply and receive acceptance into the program.

As part of the application process, you will be asked to provide the following:

  • A resume
  • Link to a video of you performing a Shakespearean monologue of your choosing (1.5 minutes max.)
  • International Students Only: English Language Proficiency is required to fully participate in the institute. A TOFEL score of 100 or higher is preferred.

Students will be notified within two weeks of an acceptance decision.

How to Apply

Registration for the Owning Shakespeare Summer Institute can be done conveniently online using the steps below.

  1. Access the Summer Institute Online Registration Form. Read all terms and conditions, then scroll to the bottom and “Continue to Registration”.
  2. Complete the online registration form by answering all mandatory questions, including the essay requirements.
  3. Submit your registration form.
  4. Once your form is submitted, you will be directed to the Retrieve Registration page.

Allow up to two weeks for the program instructor(s) to review your application. An email will be sent to you with the official decision. If accepted to the program, follow the steps in your acceptance email to make payment of the non-refundable deposit ($150) and reserve your space in the program.

A space in the program is not reserved for you until valid payment of the non-refundable deposit* is completed. Those who are not prepared to pay after program acceptance can submit their registration form and retrieve registration at another time to make payment, however you risk losing a space in the program if the program reaches capacity prior to the ability to pay.

This deposit is not refundable under any circumstances including, but not limited to, drop for non-payment and withdrawal, even if you withdraw from the program before it begins. If you withdraw, this deposit will appear as processing fee charge on your BruinBill account.

If the program is full, you will not be prompted to make payment. When your application is accepted from the wait list, you will be notified by email with instructions for methods of payment.

If registering after May 1, full payment of all fees including the non-refundable deposit but excluding any applicable document and IEI fees is required to reserve your space in the program.

How to Make Registration Changes

Already submitted the online registration form but need to make a change or finish your registration? You can easily do so by accessing your existing registration. To retrieve registration, please complete the steps below:

  1. Access the Summer Institute Retrieve Registration Form here.
  2. You will need your five-digit registration number that was sent to your email address. Fill out the form, then “Submit”.

Many changes and additions can be made using retrieve registration including: Payment submission of the non-refundable deposit

  • Uploading required documents
  • Dropping a current program
  • Adding a second program
  • Switching to a new program
